Who is more resilient than an athlete? During these challenging times of COVID-19, it’s more important than ever to recognize those who inspire us. For the last eight years Coordinated Health and the Morning Call have partnered to honor senior high school athletes through the region’s premiere Athlete of the Week/Year program. We are proud to announce that the program, which runs throughout the school year and recognizes one outstanding male and female athlete each week with a $500 scholarship, will resume as of today with a revamped process.
Beginning April 13, the Morning Call sports staff will select three seniors representing each boys and girls spring sport based on outstanding performances last year. An athlete’s performance could include elements like statistical standouts, game or tournament MVP’s, record-setting performances or noteworthy performances. Those nominees will be eligible to be named Athlete of the Week based on a public vote and winners will be announced each Friday in the Morning Call. You can find more information at CHAthleteoftheWeek.com.
In addition to the weekly scholarships, Coordinated Health also awards one male and one female Athlete of the Week winner with a $10,000 scholarship at their pinnacle Athlete of the Year event each May. This year’s Athlete of the Year awards will be a virtual event, broadcast live on PBS39 May 19 at 7 p.m. Former captain of the United States women’s national soccer team and three-time Olympic gold medalist Christie Pearce Rampone will speak during the event, providing inspiration to student-athletes at a time when it’s needed the most.
We are thrilled to continue to partner with area schools and athletes and bring some much needed levity and excitement to what we know is a challenging time. Please join us in celebrating these spring athletes by voting each week on The Morning Call’s Athlete of the Week site. You can also vote on the CH Athlete of the Week app. Just download it for free through Apple or Google Play and vote!
