Lori McClure was playing with her 3-year-old daughter when she first felt a painful lump on her breast. She wasn’t immediately concerned because she had always heard breast cancer didn’t hurt, but knew she needed to have it checked. When her regular OBGYN was unable to provide her with the answers she needed, she was referred to Coordinated Health Breast Surgeon Dr. Cara Guilfoyle.

After a biopsy and other testing, Dr. Guilfoyle diagnosed Lori with an aggressive form of breast cancer and recommended a double mastectomy as well as four months of chemotherapy. Though upset about the diagnosis, Lori wanted to have her surgery as quickly as possible. Coordinated Health Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Gregg Guilfoyle, who is also Dr. Cara Guilfoyle’s husband, cleared their schedules in order to perform the surgery within a week.

“You usually have to wait weeks in order to get surgery and start treatment so I was so grateful that they acted so quickly. They worked so well together and you could tell they communicated about everything. They were both very compassionate and understanding,” says Lori.

It’s been a year since Lori finished up her chemotherapy and is happy to report that all of her tests continue to come back clear. The busy mom of two and gym teacher is back to her normal routine, but has a new outlook on life and advice for women.

“I really live every day like it’s my last and try to spend as much time as possible with my kids. It’s really important for women to trust their instincts because you know your body better than anyone else. If you think something is wrong and you don’t get the answers you want from a doctor, see another doctor until you get the answers you need,” says Lori.
