Millions of American’s will usher in summer this Memorial Day weekend with outdoor parties and barbecues. However, Coordinated Health Primary Care Physician Michael Nimeh warns that if you are serving food at an outdoor party, you should follow precautions to make sure you and your guests don’t get sick. “Foodborne bacteria can actually grow faster in warm temperatures so it’s important for those hosting outdoor gatherings to be aware of basic food prep safety to avoid food poisoning ,” he says.

Some food preparation tips he recommends are:

  • Cook meat products like hamburger and hot dogs thoroughly
  • Wash your hands before handling any food and after touching raw meat
  • Avoid cross contamination of bacteria by using separate utensils, dishes and cutting boards for raw/uncooked meats
  • Refrigerate all perishable foods within two hours and make sure anything containing mayonnaise isn’t out in the sun for more than 15 minutes.
  • Clean your grill thoroughly before every use
