Walking into the gym can be an overwhelming experience, even for the most experienced gym goer. After all, there are countless machines that are all meant to work and tone different areas of your body. How’s a person to decide what the best machine is for them? Fortunately, Coordinated Health Sports Training and Performance Coach Alexa Cooper has some tips on what the best machines are to use at the gym. 

Q. What is the best overall Gym Equipment for Cardio?

A. Depending on the individual’s goals, the answer to this can vary. I would personally recommend the stair master above all pieces of cardio equipment. Along with getting a great cardiovascular workout, users are also strengthening their lower body at the same time, which can lead to increased lower body muscle mass and an increase in basal metabolic rate (BMR). Since the largest muscles in the body are being worked while climbing stairs, the amount of energy expenditure is very high. These two factors combined can help to increase energy expenditure throughout the day. Lastly, if users limit the amount they rely on holding on, balance and core strength can benefit greatly.

Q. What is the best machine to use for legs?

A. My choice for the best machine to use for leg strengthening would be a leg press. The leg press is the most compound machine a mimics every day movement the closest. Depending on the positioning of the person’s feet, it can be used to target the quads, hamstrings, and glutes.

Q. What is the best machine for arms?

A. I would suggest using a cable column for arm workouts. Most cable columns have adjustable heights and adjustable handles or ropes that can be used for a variety of exercises including the muscles of the back, chest, shoulders, biceps, and triceps.

Q. What is the best machine for stomach?

A. When it comes to working the abdominals, the equipment required is very minimal. In most cases, a mat on the floor is the greatest “machine” you could use. A stability ball is also a great choice of equipment because it is a multi-use item, which can be used for a variety of different core exercises. Due to the fact that many people have a hard time activating their core, very basic activation exercises are suggested in the beginning of a workout to prime the body.
