When you should see an orthopedic specialist near you
Many people experience an orthopedic injury or pain at some point in their lives. If you think you've broken a bone or sustained another type of acute musculoskeletal injury, you should make an appointment to see an orthopedic specialist as soon as possible (or skip the appointment and visit one of our walk-in injury centers!). You should also see an orthopedic specialist for degenerative conditions like arthritis or pain that comes from repetitively using the same joint over and over.
Reasons to see an orthopedic specialist include:
- A recent injury to the hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, foot, ankle, hand, or wrist
- Joint pain accompanied by heat, swelling, and redness
- Gradually progressive pain that is worse with weight-bearing
- Severe joint pain that prevents you from getting around or doing your daily activities
- Nagging joint pain that might be related to an old injury
- Difficulty moving a joint
- Moderate or advanced arthritis
- You've been told you might need a joint replacement
