Venkat Kanthimathinathan, MD, FASMBS, is a bariatric and general surgeon at Coordinated Health.
Dr. Venkat specializes in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass procedures. He sees patients at the CH Allentown campus at 1405 North Cedar Crest Boulevard, as well as the CH Lehighton campus.
Dr. Venkat is originally from India and he attended medical school there before coming to the United States for his general surgery residency. Afterwards he completed a fellowship in minimally invasive bariatric surgery at the University of Missouri where he met his future Coordinated Health colleague Dr. John Dockins.
Originally Dr. Venkat wanted to specialize in cardio thoracic surgery, but he changed direction after working with patients suffering from chronic heart conditions. “Looking at patient charts, I realized that chronic conditions are what led to emergency heart procedures, so I chose metabolic and bariatric surgery to get to the bottom of issues and prevent before patients become sick,” he said.
Dr. Venkat is also married to Coordinated Health endocrinologist Dr. Lakshmi Kannan, who specializes in medical weight loss.
“Coordinated Health has a big vision and a patient-focused multidisciplinary team approach,” said Dr. Venkat. “I’m really proud to be here because I think we can and we will do great things.”
He adds that he could not have asked for a better team to work with than his wife and his longtime friend Dr. Dockins. “This is my second home. My wife is here, my friends are here, what else do I need?” he said.
Dr. Venkat also has volunteer experience at blood donation camps, pulse polio immunization programs, communicable diseases public awareness programs, and school health programs. He is passionate about giving back to the community and helping his patients.
“The most rewarding thing about being a bariatric surgeon is helping people get back to doing what they had once been able to do,” said Dr. Venkat. “When they thank us and are shedding tears in the office with happiness after their bariatric surgery, that’s what keeps me going.”
